How to increase the effectiveness of your sales pitches with the help of a warm beverage or a good meal.

When you have to promote an idea, get help from a warm beverage or a good meal.

Studies show that our arguments are more effective and have a greater chance of being accepted when we are sharing a good meal or a warm beverage with the other person. Even just holding a warm cup automatically improves your outlook toward a complete stranger. If you have to promote an idea, ask them to dinner. At least ask them to go for a cup of coffee.

There are many situations where you need to sell an idea:

1. When you are in direct sales, this is your primary task!
2. When you need to persuade your employer to adopt a new idea.
3. When you need to convince other executives or co-workers of an idea.
4. When you need to ask for a favor.
5. When you need to ask for a raise.
6. When you need to get buy-in from your employees for a new program you are supporting.
7. When you need to convince that special person to go out with you again!

In all of these cases and more, use the help of a “good” meal! Ask them out to dinner or for a cup of coffee. Remember, it is critical that the food is “good”. “Bad” food will actually hurt your cause. What are the person’s favorite foods? Where do they like to eat?

If selling is a big part of your job, make sure that you have good coffee and tea ready for your meetings. Maybe even get a cappuccino machine! Have the coffee and tea ready to go before the meeting. When the other party gets there, show them coffee and hot water and ask if they would like some. Do not ask if they would like you to prepare it, have it ready to go!
