| 9.7 | Confidence Tip - Visualize Already Having Done it Successfully |
|
How to improve your confidence for a task by visualizing already successfully doing it.
|
 | If you are faced with a challenge or task and you need to increase your confidence, imagine already completing it successfully. Studies have shown that visualization improves athletic performance, public speaking, mental performance and personal interactions. In some cases, visualization has been shown to help performance more than a live practice.
By visualizing your success, you train your brain to handle the situation. Your conscious mind can really only think about one thing at a time. You cannot really control everything you are doing consciously. If you had to stop and think about how you are holding your hands, how loud your voice is, how you are breathing and what expression is on your face, you would never be able to get anything done! As you do things over and over, they become programs in your subconscious mind. You no longer have to think about it. Certain stimuli trigger the subconscious program and off it goes. When you drive to work, you often don’t have to think about it because your subconscious mind has seen the rout and knows where to turn. The same is true of visualizing success. When you visualize it over and over in your mind, you install a success program in your subconscious. When the time comes to actually perform the task, your subconscious mind will help you.
If you have to give a speech, visualize giving a great talk, the audience cheering and the great feeling you get! Now, when the time comes for your speech, instead of running the defensive fear program, your subconscious mind will run the success program!
The trick is to make the visualization as real as possible. If you can, actually go to the place where you have to perform. Imagine the sights and sounds you will experience. Imagine all of the stimuli to all of your 5 senses that will occur right before you have to perform. Then, imagine a great success! Now your mind knows the triggers that should start the program and the success that will be the result.
Try doing your visualizations when you are relaxed. The best time is right before you go to sleep or right after you wake up.
