How to make correct decisions by visualizing the long term consequences.

Many of our decisions are controlled by our subconscious mind. Our minds think about immediate pleasure and pain. We often put off things that we need to do because of the immediate discomfort. We need to train ourselves to think in the long term when we are faced with decisions.

If the decision is obvious, make a list of the pros and cons. Visualize the benefits you will get from doing something. How will you feel? Now visualize the bad things that will happen if you don’t do something. How will that feel? Not good! Does the short term discomfort compare with this long term pain? No!

When you get that feeling of procrastination, remind yourself of the pain you will have if you do not get going! Train your subconscious to link this pain with procrastination! Do this by visualizing what will happen. Try to experience the feelings you would have.

Once you have created the link, your mind will subconsciously drive you to complete these tasks in a desire to avoid pain. When it comes time to make decisions about doing something, you will now be driven by the long term consequences.

The next time you have to decide to do or not to do something, visualize the consequences. For example, if it is time to exercise and you are not motivated, think about what will happen if you don’t exercise. How will you look in 1 year if you don’t exercise? How will you feel? How will the people around you feel? How will this affect your career? How will this affect your personal life? Now think about the benefits of consistently exercising. How will you look now? You will look great! How will you feel? How will your life be better? The decision is easy! Get going!

1Ask what will this cost me in the long run
Even for little things like eating an extra desert or spending you money on something you don't need.

How will these things add up and hurt you in the future?

2There is a space between feeling the reaction and actually reacting
We are humans, we do not have to give in to impluse reactions. Stop and think, do I want to do this. Every action you take is a decision. Make your decisions add up to a successful life.
