How to get people motivated by giving them a sense of ownership in an idea.

Get “buy-in”. People like to execute their own ideas. Let them. When working on a project, bring people in on the creative part of planning and get their input. REALLY LISTEN TO THEM. If they have a good idea that you also had, give them credit for it. Make sure that every one knows it was their idea.

Find out how your people best come up with ideas. Do they work best in a brainstorming session with other people? Do they like to go away and think about an idea for a while? Try both ways. See what they come up with and try to integrate their input into the project.

If it is clear to them and to others that the ideas were theirs, they get ownership. You get “buy-in”. They now have responsibility. If the project does not work, it is partially their fault. If the project is an amazing success, they get credit! They know this. This fear of public scrutiny is a great motivator. They will be more likely to contribute at a higher level.

When people contribute to an idea, they become believers. To support a belief you will subconsciously look for evidence to support it. These people will now be the project’s biggest supporters. They will find and disseminate reconfirming evidence that supports it. People will be focused on the completion and success of the goal.

1Management = Sales
It is all about sales. When you manage you must sell your employees. If they do not believe in you or where you are going, they will not work. But if they do believe, WOW! The effort cannot be matched.
