How to drive yourself to achieve a goal by using a Daruma doll.

 |   Daruma dolls have been used in Japan for hundreds of years. They are popular with students going for academic goals.
Here is how they work. The doll, usually a red, round shaped, ceramic doll, starts out with two bank eyes (no pupils). Start by thinking of a goal you want to accomplish. After meditating on this goal, fill in one of the pupils. Now set the doll somewhere visible. A good place is near your bathroom mirror where you get ready every morning. You cannot fill the second pupil in until your goal is accomplished. The Daruma will continue to stare at you with one eye, day after day until you reach your goal!
Daruma dolls have a real psychological effect. Researchers believe that the dolls have several attributes that can help push you towards your goals. The Darumas are non-symmetrical. This is very important to human beings. We crave symmetry. We are attracted to symmetry and we notice when things are not symmetrical, especially in a face. We also see the doll as something that is incomplete. It is something that we started and need to finish. The bright red color is also very important. It is the most emotional color for humans (the color of blood.) Psychologists sometimes describe it as the color of emergency. It is the color that our subconscious picks up and registers as important. These three things keep the goal in our mind and keep us striving towards it (the lack of symmetry, the desire to complete, the color red).
 I got my first Daruma doll as a gift from my sister when I started graduate school. It worked that time. It was very rewarding filling in that second eye on graduation day! Now, the completion of the Daruma means a feeling of accomplishment, great success and a great party to follow!
Today, I use images of Darumas instead of the actual dolls. I take an image of the doll and put it with an image of the goal I want to achieve. This way, the goal and the Daruma are in my mind and I can work on several goals at once.
