| 9.7 | Happiness Tip - Tune Down Embarrassing Memories |
|
How to stop rehashing embarrassing memories by changing how your brain stores them.
|
 | Our brains store our memories as images and sounds linked together in chains. These links can trigger emotions like happiness or embarrassment. If you were embarrassed in the past, you might associate this feeling with a certain behavior. This will cause you to avoid this behavior almost like it could harm you physically. This can stop you from living the life you want.
When memories are intense they have more effect on our emotions. As memories fade they become less likely to cause pain and put you in a defensive stance. Think about the many things that you were once embarrassed about but now find humorous. This is because the memories are dimmer and less clear than they were before. It is almost like they did not happen to you, but to someone else. If you change how your painful memories are stored you can make them seem like they occurred a long time ago. This way, it will be much easier to laugh at the experience.
Here are the steps to take:
1. Pick a semi-painful memory. Something that was embarrassing or hurtful. Image the memory as if you were there now.
2. Run through the memory like it is a movie. Start from right before the event to right after.
3. Now, turn down the brightness of the memory. Think of it like a television with a brightness knob that you can turn either way. Turn the brightness down very low and run through the memory again.
4. Now, turn down the volume of the memory. It now should sound almost like you are under water. Run through the memory again.
5. Now, turn down the touch sense or kinesthetic of the memory. As you run through the memory, everything is soft. You feel numb. Nothing can hurt you.
6. Now, run through the memory one more time and as you go, turn everything down. All you see is a blank black screen.
The memory is now stored as a dull, toned down version. How much farther away does the memory feel now? Repeat the process to push the memory even farther away.
