How to stop watching too much television and spend your time on energy on improving your life.

Watching too much TV is a habit. It has become engrained in your subconscious through repetition followed by positive reinforcement. You probably have a routine that you follow for the TV. You may get home from work and go straight to the couch. You sit down and turn on the TV. Studies show that the Television puts your brain into an alpha state. The alpha state is a semi-unconscious state that is very relaxing. This feels good. However it makes you very susceptible to suggestion. This is why advertisements on television are so successful.

This daily routine followed by relaxation has created this habit deep inside your subconscious mind. You may find yourself on the couch watching TV without even consciously knowing what you are doing.

The good news is that we do understand something about habits and people can successfully break bad habits.

The first step is to interrupt the trigger that leads to the habit. In the case of TV it may be sitting down on the couch or getting a drink or snack from the fridge. Your mind remembers these actions as has come to predict the behavior that follows. It will automatically kick in and begin to stimulate the systems in your body that lead to the habit. Interrupt the trigger and your mind does will not go into this predictive mode. Do not sit on the couch. Do not get that specific drink or snack.

Next, replace the old bad habit with a new constructive habit. Instead of watching TV, go for a walk. Endorphins are released when you exercise. They make you feel good! Let yourself feel good when you exercise.

When you finish the new constructive activity let yourself feel good. This is the positive reinforcement that will make this a new habit. Give yourself congratulations. Tell yourself that you did a great job. Smile and stand up tall.

It takes 21 days to create a new habit, so continue for three weeks straight not watching TV and doing the constructive habit instead.

Identify all of your bad habits and get rid of them! Replace them with constructive activities and you will be amazed and the progress you can make in a very short time.

Here is a summary of how to stop watching too much television.

1-Figure out what triggers the TV watching. It may be sitting down on the couch.
2-Interupt the trigger. Simply don’t sit down on the couch.
3-Replace watching TV with a constructive action. Go for a walk.
4-Give yourself positive reinforcement when you complete the constructive action. Tell yourself, “great job!” and smile.
