How to avoid impulse purchases by making a shopping list before you go.

If you make a list before your go shopping, you are less likely to make impulse purchases that you don’t really need. Studies show that up to 20% of purchases made in a grocery store are impulse buys. If you stick to the items on your list, you could save and instant 20% of what you spend at the store!

If you stick to the things on your list you will avoid those tempting impulse buys. It will be much better for you pocketbook and your diet. Remember that marketers are psychological experts. The packaging, the message and the placement of their products is meant to create a temporary need in your mind. When you see a product and you feel like you want to purchase it, remember that you are being manipulated. Do not be tricked by great sales or warnings that the product will soon be gone. These are all tricks to get you to buy. Make a rule that if it is not on your shopping list, you do not buy it. If you see something you want, you can go home and put it on a new list, but you have to wait until next time to buy it. After a few days, the marketing will loose its effect and you will probably find that you do not really want the product.

Also try to buy holiday and birthday presents early. When you think about important dates that require presents, put them on your list. When you buy presents ahead of time you are less likely to overpay or buy products that the person really does not really want.
