How to increase your confidence level by standing up straight.

How you act can control your mood. Confidence is a state of mind. Confidence is not a permanent characteristic. All of us have had times when we felt confident and times when we have felt a little bit insecure. Think back and remember a time when you were performing at a high level. Remember how confident you felt. Now you know that you can feel confident if you are in the right mood. It has long been known that you can change your mood by changing your physiology. So, you can actually put yourself in a confident mood by acting like you are already confident! One way to do this is to stand up tall. It is easy to do and it is very effective.

Think about the confident people you know. How do they hold their bodies? They stand up straight! When you go out, keep good posture and stand up straight. Decide where you are going and walk there with authority! You will find that you instantly feel a higher level of confidence.

When you stand up straight, you look confident. You look like you have nothing to hide. You are not afraid! Crouching is a defensive stance. You look like you have to protect your mid section. Slouching is the stance of fear. People recognize this at a subconscious level and treat you accordingly.

Get a posture book and start working on your stance immediately. “The Alexander Technique” is a great way to get better, more confident posture through exercises and stretches.

To feel what good posture is like, stand with your back against a wall. Try to press your spine as flat as you can against the wall. Suck in your stomach so that your lower back is flat against the wall. Pull your shoulders back so that they also touch the wall. Lift your head up high and tuck your chin in so that the back of your neck touches the wall (stop if you feel any discomfort). Remember how this feels. This is standing up straight with your back in straight alignment. Try stepping away from the wall and returning to the straight posture.

When you are walking suck in your stomach and keep your head high and your shoulders back. Your stomach should feel like it does when you tuck your shirt into the front of your pants. You can also imagine that a string is tied to the top of your head and is pulling it straight up.

Try to consciously think about your posture throughout the day. When you think about it go back into a tall, straight position. You will find that you feel more confident and people start to treat you like a confident person. You will also look healthier and taller (both qualities of confident people!)
