How to help yourself stick to your diet and make sure that you maximize your efforts by signing up for a credible diet program.

A diet program may be a great way for you to get the support and information you need to get serious about nutrition. However, make sure that the program is credible. Many commercial programs help people loose weight in the long run, but many do not.

Before you sign up for any diet program do the following:

GET REVIEWS. Check for online reviews and ask people who have been with the program for a long period of time.

DO NOT BELIEVE ANY OUTLANDISH PROMISES. Any promise of lighting quick weight loss does not work and will end up causing you to gain more weight in the future.

ASK FOR THE DATA. Ask for the statistics about the success of the program. Make sure to ask for long-term data that shows how well people keep the weight off (1 to 2 years into the future). All programs have this data. If they do not give it to you it means that the program does not work.

ONLY EAT “REAL” FOOD. Effective, long term diets do not require a “magic” pill. Good programs will only have you eat real, natural foods. You can choose to buy pre-packaged meals for your own convenience, but be wary of supplements (They can be very harmful).

Nutrition is a science. There are people who have gone to school and have decades of experience that can help you with your diet. Unless you are a professional, you may not know what diet will maximize your results. Professional dietitians and sanctioned diet programs will know how to adjust your diet for your body type. They will know how and why fad diets hurt you in the long run. They will know the best ways for you to loose fat and stick to your diet.

The way you are eating now may not be helping you. If you eat too few calories you could actually be killing your muscles. You may have tried some unbalanced, fad diets that increase your cravings and actually make you gain weight in the long run. Good diet programs will help you set up balanced diets that will minimize your appetite. They will make sure that you get the nutrients you need and will actually make dieting easier!

Even better, sign up with some friends! You are more likely to stick to a program when it has a social aspect. You will not want to let your friends down by missing a meeting and nothing helps more that a little friendly competition!
