How to get the best performance from people by pointing out what they are doing right.

Because we are social animals, we all have an innate desire to contribute to our social groups. When we feel important, like we are making an important contribution, we are much more likely too put effort into our jobs. The result is improved performance.

Making other feel important is a great motivational tool. It gives positive reinforcement and direction. It gives clear feedback for positive actions.

If you do not point out how your employees, children or friends contribute to the happiness and success of your business, family or social group, they will not be reinforced to continue the good behavior. If a member of a social group does not feel they are contributing, they will feel rejected and will often leave the group. If you do not want this to happen, and you want the best effort from those around you, remember to make them feel important by pointing out how they contribute.

Never take anyone for granted! Get a pad and paper right now! Write down how the people in your life are contributing. Write honest statements about their importance. What do they do that is unique. Think about the members of your family, your spouse, your employees, your friends. Write down three ways each of them contribute to you family, your company and your social groups.

Remember that flattery does not work. It will result in the opposite effect you are looking for. If you are insincere, It will actually repel people. If it is false praise, they are not motivated to keep up a certain action. They quickly learn that the praise is not truly associated with positive performance. Why perform if you are going to get false praise anyway?

It may not be easy all the time, but honestly think about the good qualities and contributions that the people are actually making. Performance of the group will get better and your employees will appreciate you for noticing.

Employees only work so hard for money. You get real effort from a sense of belonging, a sense of pride and a sense of making a difference. Let them know when they do these things and you will get the most out of them.
