How to guide people without causing resentment.

If you have to criticize a person for their performance, make it short. Sit them down, make sure that they know that you are serious and that what you are about to discuss is important. Then, give it to them straight. Write and rehearse the statement beforehand. Make it as short and easy to understand as possible. Tell them what they did wrong and why it is wrong.

DO NOT REPEAT YOURSELF. Do not patronize. They heard you the first time and they understood. Do not keep bringing up the issue. Do not mention it again unless the performance problem reoccurs.

Remember, criticism is important! It is the only way to teach your employees what to do and what not to do. But make sure to follow any criticism with honest appreciation for the things they are doing correctly. Make sure they feel important and that they are contributing to the company, family or social group.

2When I make a mistake I am sorry.
Don't blame others for your mistakes. Admit them, learn from them and move on.

Don't make the mistake of criticizing too much! This can create hostile feelings. When this happens, you are the one making the mistake!
