| 9.7 | Goals Tip - Use the NLP Swish Pattern |

How to make an unproductive habit automatically trigger a new productive habit by using an NLP Swish Pattern.

 | The Neuro-Linguistic Programming or NLP Swish Pattern uses how our brain represents our behavior to switch an unproductive habit with a new productive habit.
Here are the steps
1. First pick a behavior that you want to change. It could be overeating. It could be lying around on the couch instead of working out.
2. Close your eyes and imaging actually doing the unproductive behavior. If it is overeating, picture yourself going and getting the food and then eating it. As you are eating the food, imagine the result of continuing this behavior. See yourself as so overweight, tired and depressed. Freeze this image in your mind and remember it.
3. Now clear your mind by imagining black paint covering up what you see. Start from the top left corner of the image in your mind and black it out going from left to right until you black out the entire thing.
4. Now picture the behavior you want. Instead of eating the food, imagine putting the food back and now see how you will be if this becomes a habit. See the fit, healthy, confident, perfect you in your minds eye. You look and feel great!
5. Clear your mind again with the black paint method.
6. Now remember the bad behavior. Make it big and bright in your mind. Now, in the very bottom, right corner of this image, insert a small dark picture of the perfect you who does not do the bad behavior. Take a deep breath and hold it. Now, as fast as you can, make the small picture of the perfect you become huge and very bright, completely pushing out the picture of the bad behavior. As you do this, say “WOOOOSH!!!” and exhale your breath. Try to feel the excitement! When you are done, clear out the image with the black paint method.
7. Repeat this swish pattern 10 or more times.
When you have completed the swish patterns successfully, your mind will automatically recall your perfect image of yourself when you start a bad behavior. This memory will motivate you to stop the unproductive behavior and replace it with a good one.
