How to learn from failure by making excuses
How to Learn from Failure
The only true failure is the one that teaches you nothing. We have been taught for so long not to make excuses. This can be very harmful. It not only makes us blind to outside things that may have an effect on our success. It also makes us feel worthless and devalued when we do not accomplish something. This becomes the only lesson we learn…that we are worthless…this lesson DOES NOT HELP US SUCCEED. Remember that this is never true! As long as we are trying we are worthy and should be proud of ourselves. It may not be a fault in our character that made us miss a goal. It may in fact be some simple action that we are or are not taking.
Excuses start us down a path of self-awareness. We begin to examine the effects of the decisions we make and how some decisions might lead to failures later on. If we become aware of this we can change it. This is a great thing!
How do we learn from excuses? The key is to keep asking questions until you get to a source that you can change immediately.
Why didn’t you work out today? Let’s make some excuses!
1. I was too tired.
2. I was too busy.
3. I did not get ready in time.
Great excuses! Why? We can learn something from each of these.
Let’s start with “I was too tired.” What do we learn from this excuse? If it is not immediately clear, keep asking questions. “Why was I too tired?” Ah! Maybe you were too tired because you went to sleep too late. You learned something! Now, today you can take action. You can make sure to go to bed earlier and increase the chance of succeeding tomorrow!
Let’s look at “I was too busy.” Again we need to keep asking questions. “Why was I too busy?” Maybe you procrastinated your work until the morning instead of doing it the night before. “Why did I procrastinate my work? “ Maybe you were watching TV. Great! You can increase your chance of success tomorrow by throwing out your television!
“I did not get ready in time.” Maybe this is because you were spending too much time looking for your keys or your workout clothes. How can you make it easier to find your keys or your workout clothes? Great! You learned something! You can try getting your workout clothes and keys ready the night before!
We are so trapped into believing that excuses are bad that we do not let ourselves make them. It is so painful to admit to an excuse that we often just tell ourselves that we will try again tomorrow and not change anything. It is time to let go of the pain and embrace excuses. If we do not learn, our chance for success will stay the same tomorrow as it is today.
Your challenge
Write down what you want to accomplish today. Do it right now! Look at the list at the end of the day. If you missed some of the items, MAKE SOME EXCUSES!
Good luck out there!
