| 9.6 | Happiness Tip - Make Sure That You Are Living Up to Your Values |
|
How to avoid depression by acting in accordance with your values.
|
 | You get depressed when you do not live up to your values and expectations. This creates an internal conflict. Deep down, you do not want to accomplish your goals if they are not consistent with your most important values. To stop yourself from doing things that do not measure up to your values, your mind will shut you down. The result is depression. By making you inactive, your mind avoids the conflict. To feel happier, you can change one of two things. You can change your values or you can change your actions.
Take a good look at what you are doing in the major areas of your life. What are you doing in these areas? Where are your actions taking you? Are there any conflicts between the areas? Are your actions in these areas consistent with what you think a “good” person should be doing?
How is your career?
How is your family life?
How is your personal health and appearance?
How is your monetary situation? Are you meeting your financial goals?
Are you contributing do your community?
Are you growing mentally and spiritually?
Are any of your actions in conflict (a common conflict is work vs. family)?
If you are not living up to your expectations and values in any of these areas, make a change. If your actions in one area conflict with your values in another, look for a compromise. Change some goals. You may need to move the focus of your attention to different areas of your life. Get some help. Get a book. Get a personal trainer. Go see a family therapist. Take action. By doing something, even something as small as writing down a new goal, you will make yourself feel better.
You may also need to take a look at your values. Have you set reasonable expectations for yourself? Are you trying to live up to your values or someone else’s? If you have questions in this area, you may need to do some “soul searching”. You need to define what “good” is for yourself. You may need to give yourself a break. Remember that your best is always good enough.

| 1 | Teaching vs. Money |
| Yes. I want to teach. I love it! But I also want to make money! Money is important to me also. I want to live a comfortable life. I want to buy nice things. I want to use money to help other people.
Teaching for a public school was in direct conflict with making money. It is difficult to do both. I was finding myself unmotivated to continue doing the extra things to be a great teacher. I found a compromise. I began teaching in a training program for a mid-sized company. I got the thrill of teaching. I am helping people who actually wanted my help. I am making money! I use my extra time and money to help kids. My life is much more productive and satisfying.
