| 9.6 | Relationships Tip - Really Listen to Your Partner for 10 Minutes Every Day |
|
How to improve your relationship by listening to your partner for 10 straight minutes per day.
|
 | We talk to people all the time, but we rarely listen. Make a daily habit of listening to your partner for 10 minutes a day. This does not mean have a chat. This means REALLY LISTEN! Sit or lay down with your partner. Look at them. Focus on them. Turn off the TV. Put the kids to bed. Remove all other distractions. Lean towards them. Watch them talk and really listen. What are they trying to say? What problems are they facing? What successes have they achieved? What worries them the most? What are they excited about? Show interest!
This type of focused listening is often called "Active Listening". To improve your Active Listening, you can try the following things:
1-Make sure you look at your partner. Do not look at other things in the room or respond to other noises or distractions. 2-Say, "Let's sit down and talk". This lets your partner know that you care and want to hear what they have to say. 3-Rephrase or repeat what your partner has said. 4-Nod and say "go on" to keep them talking. 5-Do not interrupt. 6-Avoid giving advice or comparing what they are saying with what you or others have gone through.
Make it a daily ritual before you go to bed to sit and listen to your partner for 10 straight minutes.
If you listen, your partner will tell you what they really want or what is really bothering them. This will bring you closer together and improve your relationship.
