How to improve your health by forgiving.

The health benefits of forgiveness are well documented. People who go through a forgiveness process report decreased anxiety, decreased depression, decreased vulnerability to substance abuse, decreased tension, elimination of chronic pain, decreased hostility, an increase in the frequency of joyful experiences and an increase in general well being.

When you hold anger, your body stays in a constant fight or flight mode. It produces excess amounts of adrenaline and cortisone. This results in tension, headaches and increased chronic pain. If prolonged, it can increase the rate of ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue and cancer.

This is great, but how do you forgive someone? Try the following routine. If this does not work, get some help. Do not let this person keep hurting you through the effects of your resentment.

Forgiveness Routine:

1-Think about the person who harmed you. What did they do?

2-Write down the name of the person and what they did on a piece of paper.

3-Write down your emotions about the event.

4-Write down the problems that you now face because you are unable to forgive.

5-Write down the good things that came from the experience. What did you learn?

6-Write down the benefits that you will gain by forgiving.

7-Put yourself in the other person’s shoes. What have they gone through that lead to the event? How were they harmed in the past?

8-Release the angry emotions. Just let them float away.

9-Write down that you forgive the person. Write down that you are now going to move on.

10-Tear up or burn the piece of paper….let it go.

11-Vow to stop telling the story. Do not bring it up again. Do not tell it to others and do not replay it in your mind. If you catch yourself rethinking the issue, quickly think forgiving thoughts. ACTUALLY WISH THE PERSON WELL! By doing this you are improving your health and emotional state! If you follow this advice, you can now see this negative memory as something that ultimately helps you!

Don’t forget to forgive yourself! You learned your lesson. You won’t do it again, Let it go and move on.

3Is it that big of a deal?
Often people get angry and hold grudges for no good reason. On the roads, at their bosses. Ask youself if it is that big of a deal. So what if someone cut you off, I am sure they did not mean to (they may have been in a hurry for an emergency!). Your boss may just be doing his/her job.

People are basically good. Give them a break and set your mind at ease.

5I used to focus on the bad
I used to dwell on the bad things that people did to me. The power of focus is amazing. If you focus on the bad, you tend to attract more bad into your life. Forgive and forget! It is so powerful. When you catch yourself thinking about the bad, quickly switch and think about good things in your life! You will find that as a result more and more good starts showing up!
