How to turn your junk into extra cash by having a garage sale.

 | Get rid of your junk! Get some extra cash while you are at it. Have a garage sale!
Even better, get your neighbors together and have a community garage sale. You will get more advertising and more word of mouth. When garage sales are close together they do not compete with each other, they will actually bring more people to your sale.
Make sure that you advertise on www.craigslist.com. You can also place ads in your local newspaper or for free online on sites like www.garagesalesource.com or www.GarageSaleHunter.com, Get some balloons and make some quick posters to put up at visible intersections the morning of the garage sale. Make sure to start early (before 6:00 am) on Saturday or morning. Sundays are slow, but if you have a lot of real junk it can be a good day. You can schedule a Salvation Army or Goodwill pickup on the following Monday and avoid having to put everything away. Make sure that you have plenty of change on hand (both paper and coins). Take checks for reasonable amounts (amounts you could afford to loose). Remember that this is stuff that you do not want. It is worth a small risk to get rid of it. If you bake or make crafts, have some available. These items are often big sellers.
To set the prices, check other garage sales or look for similar items on www.eBay.com. You probably will not get more than 20% of the selling price listed on eBay (people will be looking for deals). If it is an item you can easily ship, you are better off listing it yourself on eBay. If the item is too large to ship, you could also try listing it for local purchase on www.craigslist.com.
When you get extra money you should always do the following. Take 10% and do something fun! This will let your mind know that making money is enjoyable. You will be motivated to make more in the future. Take another 10% of the money and donate it to charity. This lets you know that making money is a noble thing. You are helping your community. This will also drive you to make more money. Take the rest and save or invest it for yourself.
Even if you do not make any money, you will benefit from the garage sale. By de-cluttering your house you will actually become more productive. Studies show that your mood and your energy will improve in a clean environment. Start getting ready for you sale!
