How to free yourself from destructive habits that may be stopping you from achieving your potential.



Habits are very powerful. If they are constructive, positive habits they are very valuable. They can make it very easy to accomplish your goals. If they are destructive habits that waste time and effort, they greatly interfere with your success. It is critical to develop the correct habits.

The first step is to identify the destructive habit. For example, it may be watching too much TV. It may be taking your time and energy away from what you really want in life.

We do understand the science behind habits. They are formed through repletion and positive feedback. If you continue to do something and you get some sort of benefit, it will be engrained in your subconscious mind as something good to do. You will be driven to do it without really understanding why you are doing it.

Habits also have triggers. Things that always precede a habit actually trigger your subconscious mind to predict the actions that follow. Your body will start acting out the habit without you even thinking about it. You may always sit down on the couch in a certain position before you start watching television. This way of sitting on the couch acts as a trigger. To stop the habit, try disrupting the trigger. Try not sitting in the couch. This interrupts your subconscious mind and muscle memory and makes it more likely that you will not follow through with the habit.

If possible do not go to the place where you execute the habit. For example, never get in front of the television. Just go somewhere else.

It is also very effective to replace the bad habit with a good one. If you don’t do this, you give your conscious mind nothing to think about except how much it misses the habit. Instead of watching TV, go for a walk. It is important to just get going and stop thinking. Do not allow yourself to rationalize. You subconscious will try it. Just do it!

Here is a summary of how to stop a bad habit.

1-Identify the destructive habit.
2-Identify the triggers for the habit.
3-Interrupt the trigger.
4-Replace the bad habit with a good one.

2Habits Come From Being Bored
I feel that habits fill a void that is left when we are bored. Smoking when we are standing around...biting nails....even eating. You have to fill the void with something else. When I want to eat, I just take a few deep breaths. Now that is the habit.
