How to differentiate yourself and demand a higher salary and more recognition.

 | Knowledge is not power, specialized knowledge is power. You would not pay a higher salary for someone with skills that everyone has. However, you would pay someone more for knowledge and skills that are unique.
Differentiate yourself from all the others by obtaining unique skills and knowledge. When you gain these unique qualities, those who need them will seek you out. Just like the laws of supply and demand, the more difficult it is to find the knowledge you possess, the higher the price you can demand for it.
If you are the only person who can solve a problem you instantly become a more valuable employee.
For example, if you are a teacher, you could consider taking courses in special education or advanced education. Instead of focusing on English, you could focus on poetry or ancient folklore.
If you are a dentist, look into orthodontics or cosmetic dentistry.
If you are a physical trainer, you could look into specific knowledge about training middle aged women or football running backs.
A great way to differentiate yourself is to combine skills that do not traditionally go together. For example, if you are an artist, take some courses in accounting. If you are a banker, consider taking a pottery class.
As an exercise, think of 10 areas of specialized knowledge that you could gain and help your career.
No matter where you are, you can become more specialized. Find an area that interests you and start learning!

| If you do the same thing as everyone else you set yourself up to stuggle against the competition. Be unique. Live an interesting life. Do something different.
