How to create win-win situations by figuring out what people really want.
|
 | To take action, people have to be motivated. This motivation may be a need for survival, food, water, shelter. This may be a desire for materialistic things. It may be a desire for a feeling of importance or approval or freedom. You have to know what people really want to motivate them.
To motivate someone, find out what is important to that person. If you think it is money, think again. It is rarely just money. Money by itself is worthless. It may be the things money can bring. Is it the freedom and independence that comes from having the money? Is it the status that comes from a nice car our house? Is it the feeling of importance gained when they get your approval? Figure out what it is and you can not only motivate that person but you can help them accomplish their most important goals! The result is a win-win situation. You get what you want by motivating them to produce and they get what they want in return.
If it is status that is desired, you can use a new title or office as a reward. If it is freedom or independence, you can use flex time or work from home coupons to motivate. If it is a feeling of importance, you can give them a public reward of some kind.
When managing people, always ask yourself these two questions: 1- What does this person really want? 2- How can getting what I want give them what they want?
The key is to get to know the person. Notice how they dress, act, and what they do in their spare time. Ask them directly what they want.
Use this strategy in negotiations or even conflicts and you will arrive at agreements that benefit both parties. What do they really want? Can you get it for them?
Remember that they may not care about your problems or desires. To your employees, your goals may be in direct conflict with their own. You may want more production for more profit. More production means longer hours for those employees. Remember to think of things from their point of view. Link the increase in production to the hiring of additional employees. Or link the temporary increase in production will flex time in the future. Always think of their needs.
Henry Ford said, “If there is any one secret of success, it lies in the ability to get the other person’s point of view and see things from that person’s angle as well as from your own.”

| In this case, find out what people like them want. Give them some options. See how they respond. Do a good job of explaining the options in a way that they can imagine. If they can see it, they can really know if they want it.
