How to be a great conversationalist by encouraging others to talk about themselves.
Get people to talk about their interests and accomplishments. The one way you can be sure you are talking about something that interests them! People want to talk about what they are good at. They want to talk about their accomplishments. Be interested in discovering interesting things about people! If they make comments about things, ask about that subject. Especially if it is something that could make them feel important. If they talk about the snow, ask if they ski or go snowmobiling. Ask how they learned. Ask where the best place is. Ask them for tips. They may have a wealth of knowledge on the subject. They are experts, you could learn a lot!

When you know that you are going to be meeting with someone, do some research. Do you know what they are interested in? Do you know what other people like them are interested in? Learn a bit about the subject, just enough to ask questions about it and to get some interest in it. Because once you learn and appreciate a subject it is difficult not to be interested in it! You now have a great opportunity to listen to what this other person thinks about it and may have accomplished in the area!

Learn about the person’s accomplishments. Their interests obviously lie where they place the focus of their attention. Do they have a family? What have they accomplished in their careers? Most successful people like to talk about their struggles. They will love to reminisce about how far they have come and the sacrifices they have made. Get them talking about these things and they will love you for it.

Ask about sports people play...great achievements in their lives. These things are what make us feel important. Be happy to make others feel great!
