How to increase your chances for a promotion or a raise by dressing well at work.

Studies show that the way we dress greatly affects our chances for promotion at work. More than 90% of managers surveyed said that an employee’s style influences their chances for advancement.
Dressing better does not only improve your perceived value, it improves your actual value. Dressing better at work makes people more productive. Our clothes actually influence our behavior. When we dress up, we focus better and are more likely to act professional. When we wear casual clothes, we are more likely to be distracted and act in a non-professional manner. When you dress at a higher level, you will perform at a higher level.
The rule is to dress one level higher than the standard for you job. If the rule is casual, dress in low business casual wear (go with khakis and a polo shirt). If the rule is normal business casual, dress in high business casual wear (go with dress pants and tie or a skirt). If the rule is high business casual go with a tie, a sports jacket or a suit.
Even if you are allowed to wear casual clothes, never do it! Never, ever! Never wear shorts or sweat pants. Never wear old worn out clothes. Never wear sandals. Never, ever wear dirty or smelly clothes!
Make sure that your clothes are stylish and fit properly. If you are not sure what to wear, get help. Ask a “stylish” friend for help or get a style guide. If you are unsure if your clothes fit properly, go to a tailor.
Even if you are in a field where you are told that dress is not important, it is. If you have a uniform, take care of it. Make sure it is clean and ironed. If you do this, you will be seen as a responsible employee. This is the type of person that will be promoted.
Remember the old advice, “Dress for the job you want, not the one you have”.
