| 9.5 | Relationships Tip - Don’t Tell People That They Are Wrong |
|
How get along better with people by not pointing out that they are wrong about something.
|
 | People will often admit they are wrong by themselves. But if you tell them, they will immediately go into a defensive stance and an argument will often follow. They will dig in and ignore all information that does not confirm their belief. You are not helping anyone, including yourself, by pointing out where they are wrong.
When you use absolute statements, it may be the same as telling someone they are wrong. It is best to avoid statements like “_____ is wrong” or “_____ is right”. This automatically assumes that the opposite side is inferior. It is best to start out with statements like, “I may be wrong, but I believe ______”, or “so far I have observed _____”. These statements leave wiggle room. This makes the other person feel like their point of view is respected and it also leave you room to backtrack if you realize that you are the one who is wrong.

| 1 | Stop and ask yourself if it is important |
| If someone is wrong and telling you, first ask yourself it it improtant. If not, let it go and let them save face. Then ask if it is "belief" related. If so, let them have their beleif (you are not going to change their minds anyway). If it is going to affect you, excuse yourself. Let them live their lives and you live yours.
