| 9.3 | Leadership Tip - Don't Brag about Yourself |
|
How to avoid offending people by not boasting or bragging about yourself.
|
 | If you have done something worth being impressed, it will speak for itself. It can be very offensive to talk about yourself and brag about your own accomplishments or qualities. Others can see this as a direct challenge or attack of their accomplishments. It immediately puts people in a defensive stance, in an attitude of conflict not cooperation. It can also make you seem insecure and actually lower the confidence that others have in you.
Even if it does not cause resentment it could make the others feel unimportant and small. This is not a way to motivate people and increase cooperation.
If you are ever tempted to brag or boast, reverse it! Think of things that the other person may want to brag or boast about and bring those things up! Let others talk about their accomplishments and you will be better for it.
