How to help yourself create a habit of regular exercise by exercising first thing in the morning.

When is the best time of day to exercise? This is a difficult question because there is no single correct answer. The fact is, the best time of day to exercise is the time that is best for you.

Studies show that weight training is more effective later in the day when your muscles have had a chance to warm up. Light cardiovascular exercise is more effective first thing in the morning. Walking or other light exercises burn more fat if done before you eat. This way, your body uses fat as fuel instead of the glycogen in your system.

Studies also show that heavy cardiovascular exercise is more effective if done later in the day. This way, you burn the extra calories you have eaten during the day. Your body will have the necessary fuel to operate at a high level and your muscles will be warm reducing the chance of injury.

These studies are great. However, remember that exercise is only effective if you actually do it. You are much more likely to cancel a workout if it is planned for later in the day. Most people find it much easier to create a long term, consistent workout habit by exercising first thing in the morning.

If you are having trouble sticking to a workout program, try planning the workout for first thing in the morning. This way, you will have fewer distractions and it will be less likely that something random will come up with a higher priority. Get ready for your workout the night before. Set out your workout clothes, shoes and anything else you need.
