| 9.5 | Diet Tip - Avoid Fad or Crash Diets |
|
How to keep your metabolism high and avoid weight gain in the long run by avoiding fad or crash diets.
|
 | Any diet that involves eating less than 1,200 calories per day is disastrous! This type of fad or crash diet will ruin your metabolism and cause weight gain in the long run. The average women needs over 2,000 calories per day and the average man needs over 2,500. When you go on this type of diet, you may drop pounds. Most of the weight you loose will be muscle mass. Muscles are the engine of your metabolism. Each pound of muscle burns three times as many calories as each pound of fat.
Your Basal Metabolic Rate or BMR is the amount of calories you burn just sitting there. This is the energy it takes to keep you breathing, your blood pumping, your brain functioning, your muscles healthy, etc. (basically what it takes to keep you alive). For every extra pound of muscle you have, your Basal Metabolic Rate will increase by about 50 calories per day. If you go on a fad diet you are eliminating the effect of your Basal Metabolic Rate.
If you do weight resistance training, you can boost your metabolism by around 15%! Remember, weight training does not have to give you bulky muscles. It can in fact slim you down! Talk to the trainer at your gym for more instructions on the best weight training program for you!
Always makes sure to eat at least 1,200 calories per day! Avoid crash diets! Avoid fad diets! They will hurt you in the long run.
